Barnet Environment Centre

21 Oct 2015

We were lucky enough to visit the Barnet Environemnt Centre on Tuesday 20th October.  We were very grown up and tookt he bus to High Barnet!

When we arrived at the centre we were met with a range of interesting and interactive activities!
We started off by being shown fossils, some of which were 550 MILLION years old!
Then we had a chance to examine and identify rocks, just like we've been doing at school.

Next, we went to a meadow and examined some compost to see what creatures might live in it.  We used magnifying glasses and found snails, tiger worms and woodlice amongst others!

Then we learned about soil erosion, and how all the extra rain we've been having in England is damaging our soil!
Our last activity at the centre was to go to a woodland and look under logs in search of mini-beasts! We discovered loads, including a leopard slug which most of us had never seen before!

When we returned to school we made our own fossils using clay and shells, which the children will bring home once they are fully dry.

All the children said they enjoyed the trip, with lots of them saying that looking under logs for mini-beasts was their favourite activity!
